The Coloradoan, a 25,000-circulation newspaper in Fort Collins on Colorados Front Range, seeks an investigative reporter who knows that a honed knowledge of public records law is only one piece of what makes a great watchdog journalist.
The Coloradoans 30-person news team needs someone who will take deep dives into the topics readers care about. From government spending accountability on multimillion-dollar tax programs to the Boy Scouts "Perversion Files," high-impact investigations are part of our DNA. Well give you what every reporter seeks -- the time and resources to do amazing work. What will you do with them?
The right candidate will have at least 3-5 years of investigative reporting experience and an inquisitive mind. Experience in covering the Colorado Legislature is a plus, while an active voice on social media and aptitude with iPhone video production are must-haves. Powerful investigations should be shared with our community in many forms, and the right candidate will be familiar with the tools needed to get their work in front of as many readers as possible.
Our investigative reporter will also be a true part of our team culture -- assisting young reporters with public records requests and collaborating with editors and peers on long-term projects. He or she will understand the value of data, from the locations of car-bike crashes to what online readership of our last investigation tells us about where future efforts should be pointed. An authoritative writing style and approachable nature with readers will get you far.
