CENTRAL REGION SAFETY MANAGER
The Region Safety Manager at Waste Connections (the "Position") is responsible for facilitating the success of Safety at Districts within their region. The position assists District Managers and their staff (especially drivers) in their anticipation, recognition, and control of causal factors that result in injuries and accidents to people and property. The position communicates expectations, provides training to District trainers, as well as front line employees and delivers these activities so they enhance operational excellence. The position is both a leadership and a team-oriented function that implements corporate values, supports Regional and Corporate consensus based decisions, and executes the decisions as efficiently as possible in the field. The position also assists in the identification, discussion, and development of Company-wide programs and initiatives designed to prevent accidents and injuries in the work place. The Position is viewed as a strategic, consulting partner to field management. Field travel is required (up to 70%).
The Region Safety Manager works closely with District locations in the field, ALL levels of the People Safety and Development Department, and will report to the Central Region Vice President.
Essential Duties
  • Assists the District Managers in "hands-on" efforts to "get the job done".
  • Participate and/or conduct safety meetings, driver observations (ride-a-longs), inspections, and other "hands-on" activities at the district level as required to facilitate training and implementation of policy
  • Stays current with DOT and OSHA regulations as well as other safety related practices affecting the Company and works with corporate Safety to keep the Companys health and safety policy manual current and up to date.
  • Serves as the regional trainer for "Train the Trainer" programs and provides specialized training to district level managers, drivers, and employees as necessary.
  • Coaches and trains district level managers and supervisors on safety policy and accident/injury prevention.
  • Develops safety training programs and aids for district level managers, drivers, and employees.
  • Initiates safety projects and initiatives that provide district management with the tools and training to conduct their activities in a safe manner.
  • Responds to DOT and OSHA complaints and notices of violation on behalf of the Company and argues the defense for the Company and the district involved.
  • Facilitates the implementation of the Companys Health and Safety policies.
  • Monitors District completion of corporate required Safety Performance Tasks (SPTs) for the current year, and develops or recommends region specific supplemental safety policies, programs, and goals that is coordinated with and which complements SPTs.
  • Assists or Conducts district facility reviews for compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Conducts accident/injury investigations in line with the corporate Safety and Claims Managers, as required.
  • Assists with the integration of new acquisitions and initiates the safety culture transition into the Company.
  • Analyzes accident and injury data for trends and recommends appropriate programs to reverse the trend.


Education and Experience
  • The Position requires a 4-year degree (Environmental Health & Safety preferred)
  • 5+ years of safety experience in an industrial, operations-oriented organization, with transportation safety preferred.
  • Experience in a blue collar work environment would be preferred
  • Experience in the waste industry would be helpful, but is not essential.
  • Specific Knowledge and Skills
  • Working knowledge of DOT and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to maintain performance levels in a busy, fast-paced and constantly changing work environment.
  • Must have outstanding oral and written communication skills and the ability to present ideas and recommendations in a clear and concise format to small and large groups of employees including field management as well as upper management.
  • Must have the ability and temperament to remain calm and professional in the face of adversity and tense situations.
  • Must read, write and speak English proficiently. Spanish helpful but not required.


Computer Software
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, E-mail, and Outlook.
  • Proficient in the use of a Laptop computer for use in the field.
  • Experience with the use of Intranet systems for communication, helpful.
